How to Print and Assemble a PDF Sewing Pattern (Beginner Friendly Guide)

Printing and assembling a PDF sewing pattern might feel confusing at first, but it really comes down to just a few simple steps. Once you get those right, the process becomes quick and easy — and you can focus on what really matters: sewing.

Start by downloading a PDF reader to your computer. I recommend the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Then download your pattern file and open it using your PDF reader. Avoid opening the file directly in your browser or on a mobile device, as this can affect the print settings.

Printing your PDF sewing pattern

Next, it’s time to print your pattern.

Open the print settings and choose the correct options.
Select “Size” and make sure the scale is set to 100% or “Actual Size.” Do not select “Fit” or “Scale to Fit,” as this will distort the measurements.

Check the print preview to ensure the pattern is centered on the page.

Before printing everything, print just the first page and measure the 4 × 4 cm test square.
If the square measures exactly 4 × 4 cm, you’re good to go and can print the rest of the pages.

Assembling the pattern

Once all pages are printed, it’s time to assemble your pattern.

You can either trim the margins from one long side and one short side of each page, or cut away the corners. This makes it easier to align the pages accurately.

Tape or glue the pages together, matching the alignment squares carefully at the corners.
Once assembled, you can either trace your size onto pattern paper or cut your size directly from the pattern.

Printing only one size (using layers)

All sizes are included in separate layers, so you can choose to print only the size you need.

Open the Layers panel in Adobe Acrobat Reader and select only your size.
Make sure to keep all markings visible as well.
